Spring Into Something Beautiful

“Don’t you feel it? Don’t you know what’s happening?”

Let me just date myself for a moment and reference a quote from a classic, The Parent Trap (Hayley Mills edition, don’t get it twisted). You want to finish the line but can’t remember the rest, right? I know, it was killing me too! Nissa, if you are reading this, I know you know it!

When winter begins to say goodbye and spring is creeping in, you can just feel it. There’s something magical about the hope of spring. When there is beauty in something and it’s hard to describe (tapping my finger on the table, repeatedly)…it’s frustrating. Spring is one of those things.

What is it about the feeling of opening the windows for the first time after a long winter? God, it’s good! Feeling the sunshine beat down on your pale ass skin and the cool air blow through the house. In early spring, everything is still brown and grey. Filthy and dead. But the real beauty is in what’s coming. Waking up to hear the birds singing outside of your bedroom window. Putting away those tired boots and feeling the gritty earth between your toes again. The entire outlook of our day can change from this and it’s a beautiful thing!

The same thing can be said about the ever-so-luxurious Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders. It’s hard to explain or put your finger on what makes them so beautiful. At the end of the day, they are just powders, right? Wrong. The real magic is in what happens when you put them on your face and realize how flawless they make you look.

Carisa Janes, the founder of Hourglass formulated and designed these powders in a way like no other cosmetic company has. With Photoluminescent Technology, the Ambient Lighting Powders are designed to perfect your skin by diffusing and softening the lighting in which you are under.

There are six in total, formulated without parabens, talc, gluten, fragrance or nano particles. The details below are taken directly from the product descriptions:

  • Ethereal Light: An opalescent sheer, cool white powder that mimics a moonlit glow, even in broad daylight.
  • Diffused Light: A soft, warm, pale yellow powder that conceals redness and gives skin clarity like a soft ray of morning light.
  • Dim Light: A neutral peach beige powder that blurs imperfections and highlights a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones.
  • Mood Light: A soft, sheer lavender pink powder that mimics the softest, most forgiving light and brightens the complexion.
  • Luminous Light: A champagne pearl powder that creates a soft, incandescent candlelit glow—day or night.
  • Radiant Light: A sun-kissed golden beige that enhances the overall complexion with believable, subtle warmth, and also extends a summer glow.

Swatch - Ambient Lighting Palette.jpg

I purchased the trio palette a while ago after hearing such amazing reviews and used it until every last bit of it was gone. Knowing this was a product that I couldn’t live without, I put it on my list of items to repurchase and my Mom, being the wonderful person she always has been, bought it for me.

The trio contains from left to right, Dim Light, Incandescent Light (exclusive to the palette) and Radiant Light. I use Dim Light  with a flat top powder brush all over the face to set my foundation. Incandescent Light with a small tapered powder brush around and under my eyes and Radiant Light as a light bronze finish with a large fluffy brush to warm up the cheek bones and perimeter of my face.

I also own Mood Light in the single pan and use it as a soft pink tint to the tops of the cheeks or as a topper to another blush to create a highlight. Not to mention the bronzer in Radiant Bronze Light highlighted in my previous blog post, Put Your 9 to 5 Face On: It’s Game Time.

Though they may be light on the face, they are not light on the wallet. But let me tell you this, they are worth every last square inch of your plastic credit card shiny penny.

You can rest easy knowing that the next time you’re off to a party wearing the Ambient Lighting Powders, you’re not going to be reliving The Parent Trap saying:

The nerve of her! Coming here with your face!

What are you gonna do about it?

Do? What in heaven’s sake can I do, silly?

I’d bite off her nose. Then she wouldn’t look like you.

You’re going to be flawless.

Put Your 9 to 5 Face On: It’s Game Time!

Most weekday mornings, I need a handsome drill sergeant leaning over my bed, staring me in the face shouting “Get up, girl! You know you don’t have time for this! Get your ass out of bed and put your game face on!” Ohh God! What can I skip just to sleep in for five more minutes? I won’t do my brows. Nope, not an option. Maybe skip washing my hair? Dry shampoo. Yes, good! What dress have I not worn yet this week so I don’t have to figure out a top and a bottom?

Sound familiar? I have this conversation with myself every morning before I finally roll out of bed, feed the dog, start my coffee and go assess the disaster that is my face and hair in the bathroom mirror.

No matter how much of a rush I’m in, I somehow always manage to get in my full routine. Every minute counts in the morning and I don’t skip a beat when it comes to my makeup.  Here’s the thing, I believe that the way I feel I look, reflects the way that I act and feel throughout the day. If I look put together, I feel put together. It’s all perception people! For you and your coworkers! They don’t gotta know your bed’s not made at home! Skip it! At least you look like you’ve got your ish together from the outside! I get it – not everyone is going to agree with me here but just hear me out. Elizabeth Taylor famously said “Pour yourself a drink (of coffee ladies, it’s still early), put on some lipstick and pull yourself together.”

There is power in every woman that leaves the house with her head held high. That is not a quote. I know this from experience.

Today, I want to share with you the three guidelines I follow every morning for a polished look: aka my 9-5 game face.

ONE – Conceal. No matter how much sleep I got the night before, the most important thing for me is to even out my skin tone. I prefer full coverage foundation, others may prefer a powder foundation or a BB cream. A favorite of mine during the dry winter months is the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. I mix this with my Cover FX Custom Color Drops for additional coverage but that alone is a great option to add hydration and natural-looking coverage to the skin. A little concealer under the eyes and a nude eyeliner in the waterline corrects the last bit of redness peaking through.

TWO – Frame. And by frame I mean outline. And by outline I mean brows, lashes and eyes. For years I never touched my eyebrows. I maintained them so I didn’t look like Bert and Ernie but until a year or so ago when brows became a BFD I didn’t pay much attention to them. Now, I realize the impact they make on framing my face. Additionally, I love the natural look of no eyeliner and natural mascara but do me a favor and do half of your face one morning. Fill in one brow, line one eye and coat your eyelashes on one eye. LOOK at the difference! HELL-O! Johnny Nash is singing to you “I can see you clearly now that you’ve framed your face the rain is gooone.”

My ride or dies in this category are the Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade. Guerlain Maxilash Intense Volumizing Mascara and the Lord & Berry Eyeliner.

THREE – Bronze & Glow. Some part of me feels just one teeny step closer to J.Lo just SAYING the word “glow“. Can I just ask all of my Minnesotan girls a question? Do you enjoy looking pasty as hell for 6 months out of the year? I didn’t think so. We all love the look and glow of a fresh tan after a nice warm vacation. It’s been a minute since I’ve gone on vacation so yet again, in one more area of my life I am going to have to fake it ’till I can make it! I hit the perimeter of my face, jawline and lightly sculpt my cheeks with my favorite bronzer, Ambient by Hourglass each morning. This adds warmth and dimension to your face.

@anahelgeson

2016 is the year of the highlight. 2015 it was “brows on fleek”. This year, you better be able to see your cheekbones shining from outer-f’kn-space. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Opal will get you there.

I’m getting a bit excited. Remember, we are talking about a professional look! Hitting your cheekbones ever so lightly with a highlight will have the rest of the women in that perfectly lit board room thinking “My God. That woman is getting 8 hours of sleep, taking her vitamins and drinking her 8 glasses of water a day. How does she do it!”

It’s the cherry on the top. The frosting on the cupcake. The strawberry in the champagne. The Channing Tatum dancing WITH his shirt off! Ya feel me?

Final note, these are the bare minimum things that I do each day. Adding some eye shadow and a lip gloss complete the look! We all pick and choose what things are our must haves when it comes to makeup, for me I don’t leave many steps out of the equation. High maintenance, is that what they call it?

 Okay girls. This has been fun. I hope you feel that you have all learned a few tricks of my trade! I am loving every minute of this new blogging life and hope you are enjoying the journey with me.

Who’s Bringin’ Sexy Back?

Well you are, of course! I’m here teach you how to SLAY V-Day in one sexy little blog post.

Single? Hitched? Plans for the big day? February 14th is just around the corner and Valentines Day is that “hap hap happy” little reminder that you might just want to turn down the thermostat and turn up the sex appeal.

Are you ready? Hold on to your grannie panties…here we go.

Picture this: A sexy, bold red lip with a smoldering cat eye. Your favorite Jimmy Choo’s paired with your best LBD and favorite clutch. Hair, check. Sexy bra, check. Perfume, just oooone more spray. You’re finally ready. You walk out of the bedroom to the top of the stairs and look straight ahead. Your husband is waiting near the door, looking hotter than ever in a suit and tie. Holding a bouquet of a dozen red roses, staring back at you like he’s reliving the moment you walked down the aisle all that time ago. You take your first step down the stairs and…

ERRRRRRRRRRT! Who tha hell remembers the last time their Valentines Day began like that?

Most of us would be happy if we had a night alone, hair up in a pony tail watching Netflix in our PJ’s and a bowl of full fat popcorn. Maybe a glass of red wine after a good dinner and a few of those frosted heart shaped cookies from the grocery store. Ahh, the glamorous life. On the other hand, if your plans sound more like the situation as described above, I applaud you AND your other half if you’re going out for a night on the town, celebrating your deep love for one another this year… You lucky, lucky bitch.

Here’s the thing ladies. Your man doesn’t need to see you with the bold red lip or the smoldering cat eye. He wants you to Shave. Your. Legs. Pluck your eyebrows. And clean that mascara from yesterday out from under your eyes. Most of all, he wants to see you happy! Happy wife, happy life (or so I’m told).

Take an hour to yourself this Valentines Day. No matter if it’s just going to be you and your dog at home together on the couch, or you and your husband catching a flight to Paris for the weekend.

Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves on V-Day and it starts with these six simple steps.

IMG_5294.JPG
@anahelgeson
  1. Shower (easy enough!) Oh yeah, get back in the shower… You forgot to shave your legs.
  2. Moisturize! So often when we are in a hurry, we skip lotion because we just don’t have the time. This step is so important as we age, helping your skin stay young and hydrated. Every woman I know has an abundance of lotion in her arsenal of body products. Find one that smells nice and slather it on. Allll over. For a date night, I like the Paris Amour body lotion from Bath and Body Works. It’s pretty, romantic and not overpowering.
  3. Let’s get freaky! A sheet mask is one of my favorite ways to feel pampered. Sheet masks are one of the hottest new trends in skin care and make the preparation and clean up of a traditional mud mask seem like a breeze. The rose sheet mask from Sephora retails for $6.00 and helps with brightening and moisturizing. Sheet masks will make you look like a killer, all while feeling sho, sho shexhy. Pull the mask out from the package and lay it flat over your face.

PAUSE – Now that you are in the process of hydrating your skin, it’s time to get into the mood and dehydrate with a little help from our good friend, champagne. Assuming you will have prepared ahead of time because you so closely took notes on my blog; run to your refrigerator and grab a bottle. Oh, you’re still naked? Well, a sneak peek never hurt anybody.

Pop! Fizz! Sparkle…sip, sip, repeat. Maybe play a little music in the bathroom. Light a candle. You know, really get the mood right.

@anahelgeson

“Dirty baaaabe. You see these shackles baby, I’m your slave.” JT.  You can feel it. He’s bringin’ it back!

4. Time to peel off that mask and finish hydrating your face. Having a vitamin C serum in your skin care regimen is said to be one of the most important things for brightening and anti-aging. I use Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil by Korres. It’s described as “a powerful brightening oil infused with real rose petals and boosted with super C to increase skin’s absorption of vitamin C by up to 1,000 percent.” Take a few drops into your hand and spread it over your face, letting it sink in before you move on to makeup.

@anahelgeson

5. Brows. Are yours on fleek?! Oh, God. That is SO 2015. Grab a tweezer and clean them up. It’s amazing what nicely shaped brows can do to frame your face and make you instantly look more polished. Brush through them with a spoolie and use a little clear brow gel if you have some on hand to lock them into place for the steamy night ahead.

6. Lips! This is a must in the winter months, especially if you plan on kissing someone! I love the Mint Julips lip scrub from Lush. Lick your lips. Take a tiny bit onto your finger and rub it around. Keep scrubbing for about 30 – 60 seconds and then rinse it off. This stuff tastes amazing and is 100% natural. Go on with your bad self and lick it off! Your favorite gloss or balm on top is the perfect finishing touch to prep your lips for lipstick (or, lip lock).

@anahelgeson

And that’s it! Whatever your plans are for this Valentines Day, I hope that you take a few extra steps to love yourself and feel your best. Even though I will be that single girl on the couch with my dog, Finn; I know I will be feeling the love from all of you wonderful girls who have been SO supportive of me and my exciting future as a blogger. The sky is the limit and I am over the moon about the opportunities that lie ahead.

From one bare-faced beauty to another, Happy Valentines Day my loves!
